Another piece of “folies architecturales” – unfinished. (It lays probably in the nature of these folies that they never are concluded, to be continued for ever, so… Since all spaces and surfaces are still not finished, and will evolve, many structural parts are not yet depicted in the shown documents, but the accordance of all vertical structures is already given.)
Villa Voronoi, a residential project based on the geometrics of the Voronai diagram that completely tessellates the surfaces. The building brakes open like a flowering blossom and unfolds its leaves to let the light in. Inside spaces are vertically and horizontally staggered to benefit from a maximum of views and daylight and ventilation when needed. This opening creates a very pleasing continuum of spaces, some lines are even extended into the garden design. The street side is protected from direct views by wooden lattices that also serve as climbing aids for plants. A building annex to the west functions either as artist atelier, including a pulley crane that permits heavy weight lifting over the truck accessible garage underneath. Also it could function as a second dwelling that has its own independant access to the street, and yet is fully integrated into the total shape.
Below a video that reveals all development stages of this project so far. Comparable to the concept of Entropy (increasing chaos in the universe), there is an increasing complexity during all the form giving process during the development of the project.
The video starts with the most simplistic spatial distribution, the very essence of a functional diagram, and evolves through stages of increasing complexity and increasing intricacy. Here the blossom analogy comes also to play. From a seed emerges a leave, from the leave a blossom, the blossom opens, etc.
Still from a strict viewpoint of the organic functionality, there is no real change during all development stages, like the immutable DNA of a growing entity. Nevertheless, there is a considerable emotional an sensory enrichment. (See my metaphor of the Gargoyle-Faucet).
